Covington promoted two of its Public Works veterans to director positions this week.
Bill Matteoli officially assumed the title of director of Public Works, and Brad Schwenke assumed the title of assistant director of Public Works after the Board of Commissioners’ approval Tuesday night.
“Middle of the night, we often talk about, think about the police and the fire department,” said Mayor Ron Washington. “The unsung hero of the city is public works … They don’t get the glory that they should.”
Both Matteoli and Schwenke have been with the city for years. Matteoli has been with Covington for 20 years, he said, having served as an engineering tech, parks and recreation supervisor, and, most recently, the assistant public works director. Schwenke formerly served as a parks and facilities supervisor.
Matteoli takes over the role of director from Keith Bales, who was moved into the position of director of Strategic Investment Initiatives, a non-supervisory role, in December; Matteoli began serving as the interim director around the same time.
“We’re excited,” Schwenke said.
