The Florence City Council has recently approved a long-term lease agreement to keep the Boone County Clerk’s Office operating on the campus of the Florence Government Center.

The Boone County Clerk currently operates a satellite office in a building on the Florence Government Center campus at 8020 Veterans Memorial Drive. Previously, the clerk’s Florence office worked from an office on the bottom floor of the Florence Government Center at 8100 Ewing Blvd.

The city council unanimously approved the long-term lease agreement during a special meeting on Aug. 18. The new lease essentially retains the same terms as the previous agreement between Florence and Boone County, with the only change being the location of the clerk’s office.

Florence Mayor Julie Metzger-Aubuchon said the office gives the clerk more operational space and provides the public direct access to clerk services.

“Just to clarify, so this moves the clerk’s office from the basement of the Florence Government Center–the lower level–and moves them to the freestanding office building A on our campus where there’s direct access to their offices over there for the clerk services,” she said.

The Florence office acts as a central hub for several key Boone County Clerk services. It is one of two county motor vehicle department locations, which manages vehicle registrations, renewals, titles and related services. The Florence office also houses the clerk’s elections department, in addition to providing limited county clerk services such as marriage licenses and notary services.

However, the main functions of the clerk’s office are located in the Boone County Administration Building in Burlington at 2950 Washington Street. The Burlington office serves as the main home for Boone County’s real estate and land-record functions. It, too, offers motor vehicle department services.

The clerk’s 30-year lease starts at $15 per square foot, or $11,875 per month, with the rate increasing by 5% every five years, according to Florence City Administrator Josh Hunt. They will rent Suite A – a 9,500-square-foot space in the neighboring building.

The building at 8020 Veterans Memorial Drive was previously leased in part to the state government. The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection still occupies one section, while leases for workforce and other state services on the opposite side have expired. The building underwent renovations in early 2026 to prepare it for a new tenant.

“While we were sad to lose workforce, which was the main component of what was going in there, ultimately that lease expired and provided an opportunity for the clerk’s office to relocate over there,” Hunt said.

Another function of the move is to allow the clerk’s office to consolidate its election operations at the Florence location. Metzger-Aubuchon said the clerk’s office had previously rented additional space for election equipment, which requires secure, climate-controlled storage. The new building effectively eliminates the need for the clerk’s office to rent outside space.

“The clerk has their elections department and they were currently renting space; it was very costly for them to rent space in addition to their space out in Burlington, and so this allowed them to consolidate their elections into that building here on our campus,” she said.
