Alvin Garrison, the current superintendent of Covington Independent Public Schools District, was honored by the Northern Kentucky chapter of the NAACP on Friday.
Garrison received an award during the organization’s Freedom Fund Gala, one of the org’s annual flagship fundraising events.

Garrison has a master’s degree in educational administration from Western Kentucky University and assumed the role of superintendent in 2013, making him the first African American to occupy the role at the district and the longest-serving African American superintendent in Kentucky. He is set to retire at the end of the school year.
Garrison’s Special Recognition Award honored him for “notable improvements in test scores, attendance and graduation rates, as well as upgrading facilities, maintaining healthy finances and partnering with colleges with programs enabling Holmes students to earn college credit while still in high school. Several students even achieved associate’s degrees before receiving their high school diplomas,” according to a press release from the district.“
