Longtime Northern Kentucky attorney Martin Butler has received Kenton County’s highest civilian honor.

On Sept. 23, the Kenton County Fiscal Court presented Butler with the award in front of his family, friends and former colleagues. The Pioneer Award honors Kenton County residents who have a record of demonstrating outstanding service within the community.

“Community service and involvement was an example provided to me early in my life by my mother and father and other members of my family,” Butler said. “It was a blessing to bestow on me early in my life, to which I am thankful. There is no greater gift than the opportunity to serve others, to work hard in hand, to provide opportunities to fellow citizens.”

Butler, an attorney with Strauss Troy Co., specializes in real estate, corporate law, commercial transactions, and estate planning. His legal work includes advising on major developments such as the Covington RiverCenter, Madison Place, The Ascent at Roebling’s Bridge, the Baldwin Complex and the Ovation project in Newport.

Besides his professional work, he has been actively involved in civic life. He served as the former chairman of Northern Kentucky University’s Board of Regents and as the former president of Habitat for Humanity. He also held leadership positions with organizations including the NKU Foundation, The Butler Foundation, the Catalytic Development Funding Corp., Urban Community Developers, and the Samaritan Car Care Clinic.

“Marty is also a servant leader who tirelessly volunteers personal time, talent and treasure to benefit our community,” Kenton County Commissioner Beth Sewell said.
