This week, in government meetings, Newport will consider reconstituting the parks and recreation division, Boone County will discuss zoning regulations for solar energy systems and battery storage facilities, and Florence will honor the Cooper High School Football Team.

What happened in NKY government last week?

Fort Thomas swears in council, reviews 2024 accomplishments

Fort Thomas held its first meeting of the new year on Jan. 2, with Campbell County District Court Judge Erin Sizemore administering the oath of office to council. The meeting included a report from city administrator Matt Kremer on the city’s accomplishments and projects completed in the past year, including a skate park grant, the reopening of Route 8, support for the schools’ new sports complex project and the hiring of a historical consultant. The city also completed several smaller projects, including the installation of radar at two busy intersections, the completion of the Vietnam Memorial and the purchase of a cell phone processing system for the police department.

Kenton County School board: Monday, Jan. 6

What you need to know: The school board will elect a president, chair, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

Newport Commission to consider reconstituting the parks and recreation division

Newport Board of Commissioners: Monday, Jan. 6

What you need to know: Aside from considering reconstituting its parks and recreation division and hiring an economic development coordinator, the commission is swearing in its members and appointing the vice mayor.

The commission is also considering changing its meeting time from 7 to 6:30 p.m.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Newport City Building at 998 Monmouth Street.

Union Commission to appoint the mayor to serve as a representative on the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments Board of Directors

Union Commission: Monday, Jan. 6 

What you need to know: The appointment of the mayor to the regional council of governments is the city’s only municipal order on the agenda.

Boone County Fiscal Court: Tuesday, Jan. 7

What you need to know: The fiscal court will discuss the adoption of zoning text amendments to the Boone County zoning regulations in the unincorporated areas of the county to regulate and define solar energy systems and battery storage facilities and identify zoning districts for authorized uses.
