The Newport Parks & Recreation Department is hosting its fourth annual Juneteenth celebration on June 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will be at The Prestant, 720 York St. in Newport. There will be music by DJ Shelby “Shabba Doo” Turney, and it is a free, family-friendly event with activities for kids and more.
The celebration will honor:
- Entrepreneur Rose Ann “Honey” Ward and her restaurant Sea Island
- Black legend of Newport Robert Ingguls
- Community mother Mattie Roberts
- Newport icon Eugene Britton Carter
- Excellence in education Donna Murphy
This year’s Miss Juneteenth is Virinda Garland Doddy.
