Alexandria is considering renaming a portion of Washington Street to “Brady Way” after resident Brady Delaney, who was killed in a car crash in April.
The Delany family purchased property in the city with primary access off a short section of Washington Street, south of East Main Street, that is isolated and has no homes, businesses or properties. Because of this, the city agreed to rename the section of the street to Brady Way per the family’s request.
The city heard a first reading of the ordinance at its meeting on Sept. 5. A second reading and official vote will be held at its next meeting on Sept. 19.
“This is a piece of land that does not have any addresses,” Alexandria Mayor Andy Schabell said. “Instead of changing all the addresses on Washington Street, it’s essentially a lot easier just to name a new street.”
Delany graduated from Campbell County High School in 2022 and began working in real estate with Keller Williams in Florence. He was 19 years old when he was killed in a car crash on the AA Highway in Campbell County.
The city’s ordinance reads, “Brady’s influence was felt throughout the community through his leadership on the Campbell County High School Soccer Team, his dedication to his friends, family, random acts of kindness and now the Be Like B Foundation, which will bless the community with acts of service and scholarship opportunities for graduating seniors.”
