A heat advisory is currently in effect for the Northern Kentucky region.

The advisory, according to the National Weather Service, lasts until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening. Highs are expected to hit 97 degrees with a heat index of 101 in the afternoon.

The heat is expected to continue throughout the week, with highs predicted to hit 95 on Thursday and Friday. Things should cool down slightly this weekend after some rain Friday night; highs will only be in the mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday, with an almost chilly (relatively) high of 78 on Labor Day.

Some of the top tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for protecting you and your loved ones from heat-related illnesses are as follows:

  • Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
  • Stay in air conditioning as much as possible; if you do not have a home with air conditioning, the CDC recommends going to a mall or public library
  • Take a cool shower or bath
  • Use your stove and oven less to maintain a cooler temperature in your home
  • Do not leave kids or anyone else in cars
  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully
  • Cut down on exercise during the heat
  • If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen
  • Avoid hot and heavy meals as they add heat to your body
  • Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are
  • Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink
  • Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
  • Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and leave the water in a shady area.
  • Stay informed: keep updated on the weather and learn the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them.
