The Covington City Commission completed the first reading of an ordinance on Tuesday that would transfer the authority to grant or deny zoning variances and conditional use permits that occur with zoning map amendments from the Kenton County Planning Commission to the city’s board of architectural review and development.
The county planning commission serves as a recommending body for development zoning in Kenton County. In some but not all cases, cities can override the commission’s recommendations with enough votes. This ordinance would give the city more direct control over variances and permitting.
The commission will complete a second reading of the ordinance and cast a vote at the legislative meeting on March 12, which will begin at 6 p.m. at Covington City Hall on Pike Street.
