Fort Wright residents will likely soon see a rise in their annual waste collection fee.
At a Nov. 2 Fort Wright special meeting, city council members conducted a first reading of an ordinance that would amend the current fee structure.
Fort Wright has contracted with Rumpke for city waste collection and recycling services for several years. When the contract came up for renewal, Rumpke informed Fort Wright that there would be an increase in cost. The city weighed its options for waste collection contracts and found that Rumpke was still the best deal.
“The cost of our contract was established via a bidding process in which Rumpke was accepted as the best bid,” city administrator Jill Cain Bailey told LINK nky.
Many Northern Kentucky cities decide on a waste collection contract with the same bidding process. Among these cities, Rumpke is a popular choice for waste collection. Fort Mitchell and Lakeside Park have chosen instead to enter into contracts with Best Way, a waste collection service based in Burlington.
The current rate for waste collection in Fort Wright is $197 a year, and the new proposed rate is $216.
In June, when Fort Wright was drafting its budget for the new fiscal year, they were aware of the increase in this contract cost and accounted for it in the budget.
The second reading of this ordinance will be held during another special meeting on Nov. 4 at 9 a.m. at the Fort Wright Municipal Complex located at 409 Kyles Lane, Fort Wright.
