The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, located in Covington, began its winter sheltering program this week.

Describing itself as a “low barrier” shelter, the emergency shelter offers beds for people dealing with homelessness on a night by night basis during the winter months when temperatures drop to dangerous levels. Winter sheltering is available for men and women. Guests may enter without any assessments, program commitments or background checks. Bed space is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Today, for the fifteenth year, we welcome women and men to come here for a warm bed to sleep in as they need it,” said the shelter’s executive director Kim Webb in a recent press release. “We believe homelessness is an emergency and that everyone needs and deserves a bed to sleep in.  Only when this necessity is provided do human beings have the ability to recover from homelessness.”

The shelter also provides self-serve laundry facilities, computer work stations, storage lockers, an on-site medical clinic and partner programs with other service providers in the region.
