The Clark County Historical Society is bringing a Fiji Mermaid to NKU’s College of Health and Human Services.

The mermaid will have a thorough exam, including x-rays and a CT scan performed by NKU radiology students, to try and solve the mystery of its makeup.

More than a century old, this creature was often part of carnivals, “museums,” and traveling sideshows in the 19th century. P.T. Barnum even had one in his collection.

Barnum described the mermaid as “an ugly dried-up, black-looking diminutive specimen, about 3 feet long. Its mouth was open, its tail turned over, and its arms thrown up, giving it the appearance of having died in great agony.”

The x-ray and CT scan is taking place Friday at 1 p.m. at NKU’s Health Innovation Center, parking available in lot K or C.
