Family Inclusive Sensory Hours, also known as FISH, are returning to Newport Aquarium with a range of sensory-inclusive amenities for guests of all abilities.

The special dates begin this week and continue through the fall, when the aquarium offers an experience tailored to guests who may need any number of different environmental changes to fully enjoy their visit.

During sensory sensitivity hours, Newport Aquarium will have lower capacities, no music, limited microphone use, and reduced lighting effects. A sensory level guide on touch, sight, and sound will be provided. Special animal encounters will also take place. Sensory sensitivity hours will be observed on Aug. 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Nov. 11 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

During vision loss hours, Newport Aquarium will have lower capacities and brighter lighting to provide a comfortable environment for guests with varying degrees of vision loss. Special animal encounters and artifact stations focused on touch will be available along with other accommodations. Vision loss hours will be observed on Aug. 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

During FISH hours, Newport Aquarium’s additional sensory amenities are also available, including sensory bags equipped with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and weighted lap pads. These bags are available to borrow free of charge to all guests. There will also be quiet zones throughout the aquarium.

With the limited capacity available for FISH events, aquarium officials recommend purchasing tickets online in advance. With the aquarium’s Plan-Ahead Pricing program, tickets can be found at discounted prices when purchased early online. Find more information here.
