The Newport Independent School District appointed Darla Payne as the new chief academic officer.
“I am passionate about ensuring student success and have a healthy respect for the work of teachers and its impact on our society,” Payne said. “I believe in the potential of Newport Schools’ students and staff and want to be a part of their success.”
Payne brings over 17 years of experience to the role; she began her career as a middle school math teacher at Holmes Middle School in Covington, teaching eighth-grade math and Algebra. Payne progressed through roles such as instructional coach and assistant principal before moving to Boone County Schools, where she served as vice principal and later principal at Ockerman Middle School.
She joined Newport Independent Schools in July 2021 as the curriculum, instruction, and assessment director.
As the chief academic officer, Payne oversees all aspects of the district’s educational programs. She leads curriculum development, implementation, and assessment through an equity lens, ensuring every student receives a quality education. Payne will also oversee collaboration with school systems, community agencies, and research laboratories to foster shared learning opportunities for staff and students.
Additionally, Payne monitors student services, professional development efforts, and the implementation of educational programs using professional learning communities to support staff.
