Highland Heights City Council heard the first reading of a proposed indoor smoking ban at Tuesday’s meeting.
The proposed indoor smoking ban would prohibit smoking inside local businesses, city property and places of employment in the city. If the council decides to go forward with prohibiting smoking in certain areas, the health department would enforce the ban through issuing a citation or through educational classes.
According to Highland Heights Mayor Greg Meyers, the ban has a favorable amount of support from members of the community, like NKU Interim President Bonita Brown who wrote a letter to council showing her support for the ban.
While neighboring Ohio passed a statewide smoking ban decades ago, Kentucky has yet to do so, which has left local leaders to go city by city to get smoking bans passed locally.
Council will vote on the proposed ban at their next meeting on June 20.
