Highlands High School junior Treiston Collins has been selected as the Kentucky representative for the 2023 Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference.
As the Kentucky representative, Collins will attend the conference in Washington, D.C., June 24 through 29 and receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college of his choice. During the conference, he will have the opportunity to meet with journalists and visit the U.S. Capitol.
To be considered, high school juniors must complete an online application which also requires submitting two letters of recommendation, three samples of journalistic work, and two essays—one about their interest in journalism and the other that highlights experiences or challenges that make them a “free spirit.”
“I feel like the conference will give me some amazing opportunities that not many other students have access to,” Collins said. “I see this as hard work paying off. I feel insanely excited and could not have done this without Mrs. Brubaker and the Highlands Journalism Department.”
