Mayor Aubuchon announced the Florence Police Department will be participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting.

The event will take place on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs. It also aims at educating the public about the potential for abuse of medications.

“This year we will be collecting e-cigarettes and vape pens,” stated Cheif Tom Grau of the Florence Police Department. “While the Drug Enforcement Agency no longer sponsors a box for returns, the Florence Police Department has a drop off during normal business hours for people to utilize.”

Aubuchon told members of the audience where the drop off location will be located.

“Individuals may take their medications to the North Parking Lot of the Florence Government Center of the Kroger Marketplace on Mall Road,” she said.

It was also mentioned that if individuals cannot participate on the day, the Drug Enforcement Administration has a collection site locator for drugs to be collected at later dates.

“Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands,” said the DEA about National Take Back Day in the past. “That’s dangerous and often tragic. That’s why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in, safely and anonymously, a record amount of prescription drugs.”
