Turfway Park Racing and Gaming is days away from reopening after a $145 million renovation.

On Tuesday, the newly renovated facility was briefly opened for a preview for local media. Turfway’s betting and gaming facility will open to the public on Sept. 1, though other portions of the horse track are still under construction. The new building features more than 1,500 machines and a simulcast area for individuals to place bets.
General Manager Chip Bach gave a tour of the new facility, noting that Turfway will offer an elevated experience while maintaining the tradition of horseracing in Kentucky.
The track was originally named the Latonia Race Track, but it closed in 1939 due to the Great Depression. It reopened in 1959, and was renamed Turfway Park in 1986. Churchill Downs purchased the track in 2019 and funded the renovation.
In addition to a gaming area with machines and a VIP space, the renovations include a venue for events and a separate space for owners, both of which have a wall-to-wall view of the track and finish line.
Areas of the track, including five new dormitory buildings and the historic Turfway building, are still under construction and due to reopen Nov. 1, according to Bach.
