A fresh coat of paint is being applied to the Purple People Bridge in Newport.

The historic span over the Ohio River between Newport and Cincinnati is being celebrated for its 150th anniversary.

Newport-based Baynum Painting is working on this bridge through Thursday afternoon, painting the entryway arch on the Newport side of the bridge.

“We are incredibly excited to have Baynum Solutions sponsor our annual fundraiser, Boom on the Bridge by repainting the entryway arch on the Newport side of the bridge. Our re-painting efforts have been ongoing for almost 6 years now and we believe this new addition will help generate the excitement and momentum to finally raise the $1.5 million necessary to paint the entire bridge,” said President of the Purple People Bridge Company and Southbank Partners, Will Weber.

The shade of purple that will be used for the repainting will be unveiled as part of the promotion.

In 2016, Baynum Solutions (formerly Baynum Painting) provided various paint swatches on the entry to test the shades of purple over time along with the type of paint products.

Boom on the Bridge capitalizes on the Western & Southern/WEBN Labor Day weekend fireworks show on the riverfront. It is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 4, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the Kentucky side of the bridge.

“We can’t think of a better way to top-off our 150th anniversary celebration than with our biggest event of the year, Boom on the Bridge,” said Weber. “This annual fundraiser is crucial to maintaining, preserving, and enhancing the bridge for the upcoming year, plus there is no better place in the city to view the fireworks and enjoy a VIP experience than the Purple People Bridge.”

Tickets for the end-of-summer fireworks viewing party and fundraising event, which is open to the public, cost $150 per person. Tables for 8 can be reserved for $1,500 a table. All proceeds will go to preserving, maintaining, and enhancing the iconic Purple People Bridge.
