Newport Independent Schools announced Thursday that the school district would assist families and students who live in the Victoria Square apartment complex in Newport and are being forced to vacate.

The new owners of the Victoria Square Apartments told tenants this week that they needed to vacate their homes by Sept. 30.

These notices come to residents less than a month before the new school year begins.

Approximately 45 students are affected by the evictions.

“We are deeply troubled by the upheaval and stress our families are facing with school starting in less than a month,” Director of Pupil Personnel & Student Services for the Newport Independent Schools Jennifer Stewart said. “Newport Independent Schools is working with local community organizations to assist students and families impacted by the phases of eviction at Victoria Square Apartments.”

Newport Independent staff are working to get accurate housing information, looking at grants available to the residents, and looking for other ways to provide assistance.

The district said students’ families could continue enrollment at Newport Independent even if they move out of the district. Families are told to contact Student Support Services at (859) 292-3001 or their child’s school for enrollment assistance.

“We are concerned about the additional trauma families are facing with the loss of housing,” Stewart said. “School enrollment and attendance for students can be one less worry.”

While the district is allowing students out of the district to stay enrolled in the school, they cannot provide transportation for those students.

Stewart said school officials are looking into additional ways to support the Victoria Square families.

“Those families needing assistance with school clothing, hygiene items, school supplies, and/or food may also contact Student Support Services so that we can assist them,” Stewart said. “Families impacted by the eviction may receive additional food assistance at our Stock the Kitchen food pantry each Thursday. These families are going to have to save money to pay their rent, last month’s rent, first month’s rent at a new place, and to pay the deposit. We are trying to take something off of their plate.”
