O’Rourke Wrecking has made significant progress in the demolition of the former IRS building, where the Covington Central Riverfront development will soon call home.

Large piles of concrete debris, old rebar and other metals are neatly stacked throughout the 23-acre site. Demolition crews will continue to organize the piles until they are ready to transport the materials off site.

One demolition strategy O’Rourke has used is installing hydraulic metal shears at the end of excavator arms in order to cut-down large I-beams. Cutting the I-beams down makes them easier for crews to transport. The scrap metal will be sold off to AK Steel, where they will be melted down and remodeled into other products.

Excavation at the site officially began on April 19 of this year. Nearly two months later, the building is nearly completely demolished.
