What you need to know

  • More than $32 million has been spent in the Massie-Gallrein GOP primary, making it the most expensive congressional primary in U.S. history.
  • Thomas Massie has raised over $5.5 million and leads in small-dollar donations, including more than $1 million from his “Save the Republic Moneybomb.”
  • Trump-aligned PACs and pro-Israel groups have spent millions attacking Massie, while pro-Massie PACs have poured roughly $5.6 million into ads targeting Gallrein

The historic showdown between incumbent Kentucky’s 4th District Rep. Thomas Massie and former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein for the GOP nomination is the most expensive House primary in United States history.

Ads from various political action committees have peppered the television screens and social media feeds of Northern Kentucky residents for months, with the volume and intensity rising over the past couple of weeks. By now, you’re probably sick of seeing commercials about “Woke Eddie Gallrein” or AI-generated ads depicting Massie gleefully fraternizing with Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, among others.

A recent Axios report suggests total spending in the primary amounts to around $32 million as of now, with funds flowing in from across the country to Kentucky’s 4th congressional district, which encompasses 21 counties and over 775,000 residents.

The race has turned into a proxy battle between President Donald Trump and Massie, who has long been a thorn in the president’s side. Massie has bucked Trump numerous times, whether by voting against the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ in 2025, voting against several COVID-era stimulus bills, or publicly disagreeing with Trump on his foreign policy decisions.

Trump has responded by disparaging Massie, calling him a “loser,” “bum,” and “The Worst Republican Congressman in History.” To get back at Massie, Trump has zeroed in on defeating him, with the president’s political machine ponying up large amounts of money.

This election cycle, each candidate has showcased strong fundraising capabilities, though the origins and intensity of their spending differ.

Massie’s Federal Election Commission filings, covering financial data from Jan. 1, 2025, to April 29, 2026, show his campaign has raised $5,541,899.88. Meanwhile, his campaign has spent $5,840,666.14.

Gallrein’s FEC filings reveal that his campaign has raised $3,163,892.11 since October 1, 2025, through April 29, 2026, and has spent $2,620,238.75.

Massie reportedly leads in small-dollar donations, as the incumbent congressman’s campaign’s recent “Save the Republic Moneybomb” raised more than $1 million in May 2026 from donors nationwide.

One of the largest spending blocs in the primary is donors and political groups associated with the pro-Israel lobby. Politico reported on Sunday that several prominent pro-Israel donors have donated millions of dollars to super PACs dedicated to ousting Massie.

Massie has been an outspoken opponent of the United States’ military operations against Iran – a stance that has put him in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump and other influential political donors. In March, he led a failed War Powers Resolution effort to remove the U.S. military from hostilities with Iran.

Throughout his campaign, Massie has highlighted pro-Israel political donors, such as casino magnate Miriam Adelson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer, and lobbying organizations like the Republican Jewish Coalition and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, for investing millions in anti-Massie advertisements. Many of these entities have historically supported Trump.

Adelson, specifically, directly and indirectly contributed $250 million to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, with Trump publicly thanking her on several occasions for her support. Her late husband, Sheldon Adelson, founder of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, was an early financial backer of Trump’s 2016 campaign

“How did this race become the most expensive race in the history of Congress for a primary. It’s because three billionaires from outside of Kentucky have funneled millions of dollars in here – they’re trying to buy this seat,” Massie told ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, May 17.

MAGA KY Inc., a super PAC founded by former Trump campaign manager Chris LaCavita and Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio, has spent $2,294,306 opposing Massie, according to FEC filings. From Monday, May 11, through Friday, May 15, MAGA KY Inc. spent approximately $944,000 on anti-Massie ads. Other outlets have reported the figure to be much higher.

Another major spender in the race is the RJC Victory Fund, a super PAC affiliated with the Republican Jewish Coalition, which spent $362,843.88 in opposition to Massie.

FEC filings show that $2,655,289.11 has been spent on ads opposing Massie, compared with $1,535,691.00 supporting him.

Conversely, Gallrein has faced a slew of ads financed by pro-Massie PACs, including Kentucky First PAC and Kentucky 4th PAC, according to Axios. The outlet reports the total spending at around $5.6 million. Many of the anti-Gallrein ads label him as “woke,” referencing his time as an executive coach for Vistage Worldwide, a company that advises corporate leaders. Gallrein has repeatedly rejected this label.

Gallrein’s FEC filing page shows that the RJC Victory Fund has spent $2,519,620.87 and that MAGA KY Inc. has spent $468,911 in support of the former military captain. The page also shows that no money has been spent opposing Gallrein.

At least one billionaire has also been identified as spending in support of Massie earlier in the campaign. The Kentucky Lantern reported last December that Kentucky First PAC received $1 million on October 23, 2025, from the Protect Freedom Political Action Committee – a super PAC. Billionaire Jeff Yass, founder of Susquehanna International Group, donated $7.5 million to Protect Freedom Political Action Committee on October 20, just days earlier. The organization had $114,000 in cash on hand before the donation. Yass is a longtime donor and ally of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who’s also an ally of Massie.
