The southbound off-ramp onto Fifth Street in Covington will close permanently on or after Sept. 14, according to an announcement this week from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
The closures will coincide with the completion of utility work on and around Third Street, which is expected to reopen around the same time.
The closure and reopening are both related to the Brent Spence Corridor Project. The exact dates of the closure and reopening may change, depending on work progress.
Although the Fifth Street off-ramp will be closed, the southbound exit itself (exit 192) will remain open. However, drivers will only be able to exit onto Crescent Avenue. The northbound ramp onto Fifth Street will also remain open.
Furthermore, West Fifth Street will close long-term (the cabinet did not say exactly how long) once Third Street has reopened. The closure will span from the intersection of Crescent Avenue to the ramp coming off the northbound highway.
Detour signs will direct drivers through the zone. Southbound drivers will have to turn right from the exit onto Crescent Avenue, then turn right onto Third Street and then right again onto Philadelphia Street to West Fifth Street.
