Incumbent Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore filed for reelection to the county’s executive seat on Dec. 30, according to Kentucky Secretary of State’s office.

“As the only candidate in this race who is a lifelong Northern Kentuckian, Boone County isn’t just where I work; it’s my home,” Moore said in his campaign announcement. “My career has been, and continues to be, dedicated to improving the quality of life for our residents, from continued investments in public safety and our infrastructure [to] lowering property tax rates to one of lowest in the region and protecting our rural land and green spaces.”

Judges/executive are the head executives of county governments and, in spite of what their titles may suggest, have no judicial role. Instead, they are the chair and a voting member of the county’s fiscal court. Their main responsibilities are creating a county budget and administering the budget as approved by the fiscal court, overseeing the funds, appointing county personnel, and forming relationships with organizations and industry leaders that support their county.

They serve four-year terms and have no term limits.

Moore’s primary opponent in the upcoming election will be Chet Hand, who currently serves as a Boone County Commissioner. Both Hand and Moore are running as Republicans and arguably represent competing factions within the Republican Party: Moore representing the more commercially-minded old guard and Hand representing the more socially conservative, grassroots wing of the party.
