The city of Independence named May 6 as “Sean Ryan Day” after the Independence native took home the first-place finish in the 27th Flying Pig Marathon.

At 2:22:41, Ryan had the seventh fastest winning run in the marathon’s history. It was also his first marathon. Independence Mayor Chris Reinersman presented the proclamation to Ryan at the May 5 meeting.

“Mr. Ryan has brought positive recognition to the city of Independence as incredible effort serves as an inspiration to both runners and nonrunners alike in the city of Independence and beyond,” Reinersman read from the proclamation.

Ryan, now a Florida resident, attended the meeting via Zoom.

“I just want to express my gratitude for this and how much I appreciate the recognition,” Ryan said. “It’s great to be able to compete and represent the hometown the way I was able to.”
