Kenton County is set to redesign an old bridge in the rural, southern portion of the county.

The bridge is located on Menefee Road and travels over the North Fork of Grassy Creek, leading directly to Shady Lane. Spencer Stork, Kenton County’s Public Works Director, said during a Tuesday fiscal court meeting that the bridge wasn’t up to par.

“It’s one of our only substandard bridges in the county roadways,” Stork said.

In February, the Kenton County Public Works Department submitted an application to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for 80/20 Bridge Funds to put toward the design of a replacement structure.

80/20 Bridge Funds are designated to be used for drainage structure repair or replacement. If approved, the county will then enter into an agreement with the transportation, which will fund 80% of the cost.

“The KYTC is gonna grant 80% of up to $100,000 for us to do a design of the Menefee Road bridge replacement,” Stork said.

On Tuesday, the fiscal court adopted a resolution approving an agreement between itself, the state, the Department of Rural And Municipal Aid, and the transportation cabinet to use 80/20 Bridge Funds to redesign the Menefee Road bridge.

“We’re adopting and approving the execution of Rural Secondary Program Agreement between the court and the state of Kentucky,” Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann said.

The redesign is projected to cost around $100,000, so the 80/20 Bridge Funds will pay for up to $80,000. As part of the agreement, the county is on the hook for any costs incurred over $80,000.

Additionally, the fiscal court also approved an ordinance to accept a proposal from Baltimore-based PRIME AE, an architecture, engineering and construction management firm, to undertake design services for a bridge replacement.

The services will only be for Phase 1 of the project, which includes geotechnical engineering and survey work. Phase 1 work is estimated to be $13,020, according to county documents.
