The Kentucky Association of Manufacturers awarded a Hebron-based metal sheet fabricator the Small Manufacturer of the Year.

Since its founding in 1965, Skilcraft has been a key company in Northern Kentucky’s manufacturing sector due to its close proximity to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. In addition to manufacturing sheet metal, Skilcraft makes parts and components for the aerospace industry, specifically items that can be used in jet engines.

“Manufacturing is the top driver of Kentucky’s economy, representing more than $34 billion of Gross Domestic Product,” KAM President Frank Jemley said in a press release. “The companies and individuals recognized tonight play vital roles in creating and sustaining well-paying jobs that support families and communities in our state while producing world class products for the global economy.”

Skilcraft was presented the award at the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers 2023 Awards dinner in Bowling Green. Criteria considerations included promoting the advancement of manufacturing in Kentucky, making key contributions to statewide quality-of-life, and innovation regarding products, production methods, or services.

“I’m so proud of the hard work and dedication our employees bring to the job every day,” Skilcraft General Manager John Zurborg said in the release. “Skilcraft is proud to be one of many contributors to the region’s thriving advanced manufacturing ecosystem, which is a vital industry for Northern Kentucky’s economic prosperity.”

Internally, the company has its eyes set on continued growth. In April 2022, Skilcraft announced plans for a $8.4 million expansion to its Hebron operation, creating 14 new jobs and adding 22,000 square feet to its facility.

Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore congratulated Skilcraft on the award by touting their growth over the years.

“Skilcraft is one of our local, family-owned manufacturing companies that has successfully grown and transformed into a major competitor,” Moore said. “It is exciting they are taking the initiative to build up the workforce pipeline. Boone County’s young adults will be better prepared to take on manufacturing jobs as the industry continues to grow in Northern Kentucky.”
