Newport High School students will join local artist, Peyton Harshfield, for a “Community Paint Day” supporting the city of Newport’s floodwall mural project.
Using a paint-by-numbers-style process, more than a dozen students will help paint portions of the murals while learning about the creation of public art and the history represented in the project.
The floodwall mural project will transform the city’s floodwall into murals celebrating Newport’s people, landmarks, businesses and defining moments. The project’s content was shaped by nearly 200 responses to a community survey and is organized as a chronological timeline, with each panel depicting a different era of Newport’s history.
The students will be painting the murals on Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at 737 Dave Cowens Drive in Newport.
The event is weather-dependent and will be rescheduled in the event of heavy rain.
