The Gateway Community and Technical College speech team won awards over the weekend at a tournament held at Berea College.
Gateway’s team of Sawyer Edelbroich and Stewart Newburger competed in novice parliamentary debate and advanced all the way to the semi-finals where they lost to the novice parliamentary debate champions, a team from the University of Virginia. There were a total of 37 teams competing in the novice parliamentary debate division.
In addition, Edelbroich won 14th place in novice parliamentary debate speaker awards out of total of 74 individual competitors, and Katie Curry won sixth place in dramatic interpretation.
Gateway was second place overall in the community college division, at its first tournament of the season.
“Overall, I was very happy with how we performed,” said Gateway director of forensics and associate professor, Randy DeBerry. “I think we have no place to go but up.”
