The mission was clear for both Dixie Heights and Conner heading into Thursday night’s district matchup in Edgewood — win, take care of business in the next district game, and earn the right to host a playoff game.

With that goal squarely in sight, and the added buzz of Homecoming night, Dixie Heights came out playing like a team on a mission.

Fueled by energy to attain the home playoff game goal, the Colonels jumped all over Conner early, racing to a 27-0 lead in the first half and never looking back on their way to a convincing 34-7 victory.

“We knew what was at stake,” Colonels senior quarterback Mason Fields said. “A home playoff game hasn’t happened in a few years here and that was one of our goals as a team.”

Fields led the charge with a huge night through the air, throwing for 364 yards and three touchdowns, with an astounding 301 of those yards coming in the first half. Fields and the Colonels exploited mismatches on the outside all evening, with Nishawn Golsby turning in a breakout performance — nine catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns. The outing nearly matched Golsby’s season receiving total entering the game, a testament to how dangerous he can be now that he’s no longer shouldering the bulk of the rushing duties.

“If they give me the ball in my hands, I’m gonna make a play and I’m gonna try my best to get the most yards I can get,” Golsby said.

That rushing load was back in the hands of Levi Gilliland, who continued to show he’s fully recovered from earlier surgery. The senior tailback ran with purpose, grinding out 74 yards on 17 carries and punching in a bruising one-yard touchdown to seal the win in the second half.

Fields spread the wealth to six different receivers as Dixie’s passing game continued to hum. The senior quarterback is now closing in on 2,000 passing yards for the season — a mark that reflects just how much the senior signal-caller has matured.

“I know what my guys can do. I know who’s around me. I trust them 100%,” Fields said. “if I do my job and they’ll do theirs. We build on that as a team.”

While the offense grabbed the spotlight early, Dixie’s defense deserves equal credit for making life miserable for a Conner team that has thrived through the air this season. The Colonels bottled up the Cougars’ passing attack, holding Grayson Montgomery to just 121 yards on 13-of-28 passing, well below their usual 200-plus yard average. Conner managed only 33 rushing yards on 25 carries, with their lone touchdown coming on a three-yard run by Joesiah Hernandez in the second quarter.

“Extremely pleased with that side of the ball,” Colonels coach Pat Burke said. “I thought our guys played well. We’ve cleaned some stuff up from prior weeks, and they played well. They played a good defensive game tonight.”

By that point, Dixie already led 27-0 — a cushion built on explosive plays, including touchdown passes from Fields to Golsby for 31 and 74 yards, a 30-yard strike to Hudson Morris, and a six-yard quarterback keeper. Even as Conner found opportunities in Dixie territory on six possessions, the Colonels defense stiffened each time to keep the game out of reach.

With the victory, Dixie Heights improves to 3-5, winning three of its last four and putting itself in prime position to secure the No. 2 seed in the district. A win over Boone County next week would clinch a coveted home playoff game — the goal they’ve been chasing all season.

“That’s certainly a goal that we’ve had for ourselves, taking care of business tonight versus a district opponent, and getting this win is one step closer,” Burke said. “We got to take care of business next week, but it was huge for us, huge for our confidence and taking the next step into the playoffs and finish the season strong.”

Conner (now idle until Oct. 24) will regroup during their bye week before hosting Scott. With the district picture taking shape, the Cougars’ most likely outcome is the No. 3 seed and a road trip to start postseason play.

For Dixie Heights, though, the formula is simple — stay on the upward swing, take care of business next week, and they’ll be right where they wanted to be all along: hosting playoff football in Edgewood.
