See below from the Week 3 on the gridiron that was.

Each week, we’ll provide the standouts from Friday night. The top passers, rushers, receivers, defensive and kicking standouts.

We’ll also look at 10 things to take away from the week.

Here goes…

10 takeaways from Week 3

— Holy Cross is off to their first 3-0 start in program history. Looking at their schedule, there’s a real possibility they can run the table in the regular season. Potential roadblocks are Bishop Brossart on Oct. 10 and Ludlow on Oct. 24.

— In Cooper’s 20-13 victory over Ryle, Ryker Campbell returned an interception for a touchdown, his 15th career interception. It’s the most in program history, surpassing 2017 Cooper grad Dante Hendrix with 14.

— Covington Catholic’s Cash Harney is well on his way to another 1,000 yard passing and rushing season. Through three games, he’s thrown for 512 yards and rushed for 373 more.

— In Highlands’ 55-13 victory over Campbell County, the wealth was certainly spread around. Eight different players scored a touchdown, nine different players recorded a rushing attempt and 13 different Bluebirds caught a pass.

— Newport’s Kendall Buck-Barber was everywhere on Friday night at Newport Stadium in the Wildcats 35-6 victory over Gallatin County. He rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns and recorded an interception and tackle for loss defensively. The interception gives him 14 for his career.

— Another serious contender for a 10-0 regular season is Lloyd Memorial. The Juggernauts have dominated the first three opponents they’ve faced, outscoring them 133-47. They have Aiken and Campbell County left in the non-district slate before they should breeze through the Class 3A, 5th District that has Pendleton County, Bourbon County, Henry County and Carroll County before closing the season with Boone County.

— Covington Catholic grad Michael Mayer and Holy Cross grad Derrick Barnes had pretty solid season openers for their respective NFL teams. Mayer hauled in all four passes for 38 yards in Las Vegas’ 20-13 victory over New England. Barnes’ Detroit Lions didn’t fare as well in a 27-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, but he recorded six tackles, one of them for a loss in defeat.

— Bishop Brossart’s Nicholas Cozzi returned not one, but two punts for touchdowns in their 55-3 victory over St. Henry. He also intercepted two passes.

— I’ve been hearing a lot about Highlands freshman Bryce Armstrong and the potential he has at quarterback. He made his varsity debut on Friday against Campbell County in mop up time and completed 4-of-7 passes for 64 yards and a touchdowns. Also ran it three times for 26 yards and a touchdown. Another potential signal-calling star brewing in Fort Thomas?

— How about the offensive numbers in the Walton-Verona and Ludlow contest? The two combined for 1,056 yards of offense! Crazy only 61 points were scored.
