The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced that incoming weather has caused a delay in the reopening of the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge in Covington.
The original 10-day closure, set to begin last Friday, has been postponed and extended to 13 days due to additional needed repairs and the potential for inclement weather.
The bridge, which carries U.S. 25, U.S. 42, and U.S. 127 over the Ohio River, will now close to vehicular traffic starting at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18. The closure spans from W. 4th Street to the state line.
During the closure, pedestrian access will remain open; however, the bridge is expected to remain closed to vehicles. The bridge is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, June 30.
A signed detour will direct traffic to the Brent Spence and Taylor Southgate bridges. Drivers should expect delays and heavier traffic in the area, and are encouraged to plan ahead, leave early, and consider alternate routes.
The ongoing $2.8 million repair project, led by M&M Services Co. Inc., began April 22. It includes joint replacements, joint sealing, steel repairs, and drainage improvements. The scope of work was expanded to include additional modular joints and steel repairs, thereby prolonging the bridge’s structural integrity.
