Every Monday, we are recapping what happened in local government over the past week and what you need to know for this week.

What happened in NKY government last week?

Campbell County Fiscal Court: Wednesday, Oct. 16

The Campbell County Fiscal Court recognized 40 students who participated in the Governor’s Scholar Program, Governor’s School for the Arts and Governor’s School for Entrepreneurship. Judge/Executive Steve Pendery praised the students for their achievements, which he said gave hope for the future.

Fort Wright City Council caucus meeting: Wednesday, Oct. 16

Fort Wright has been a City of Ethics since 2017, adhering to principles and procedures that guide ethical issues. The city recently completed a recertification training required every four years. The city’s ethics board, consisting of former city officials, was created to ensure ethical conduct and transparency. Mayor Dave Hatter emphasized the city’s obligation to operate in an honest and ethical manner, working for the public, not the other way around.

Campbell County Board of Education: Monday, Oct. 21

Newport Commission: Monday, Oct. 21

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: City Building 998 Monmouth Street 1st Floor, Multi-Purpose Room

What you need to know: Newport is holding a first reading of an order authorizing the issuance of up to $114,000,000 principal amount of city of Newport tax increment revenue refunding bonds, series 2024 (CPX Newport Commercial Development, LLC project.)

Union Caucus: Monday, Oct. 21

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: Union City Building 

What you need to know: the commission plans to discuss the Union Town Square updates.

Edgewood City Council: Monday, Oct. 21

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Location: Edgewood City Building

What you need to know: the city council plans to discuss the Presidents Park Clock Tower.

Fort Thomas City Council: Monday, Oct. 21

Time: 7 p.m.

Boone County Fiscal Court: Tuesday, Oct. 22 

Time: 5:30 p.m.

Location: 2950 Washington Street in Burlington 

What you need to know: This week’s agenda includes the second reading of an ordinance requesting to change the concept of a development plan for approximately 13.6 acres located at the terminus of Sherwood Lakes Drive.

Covington Board of Commissioners: Tuesday, Oct. 22 

Time: 6 p.m. 

Location: 20 West Pike Street

What you need to know: The commission will discuss a first reading of an ordinance amending the Covington neighborhood development code and the Covington code of ordinances to allow “single-family detached dwelling” and “lot line dwelling” as permitted building types within the central riverfront district.

At the last board of commissioners meeting on Oct. 8 the city approved a 20-year franchise agreement with Owen Electric, which will allow the company to construct, repair, install, and maintain any utility infrastructure they own along the city’s public right of ways. However, the agreement does not affect electric rates, and the Kentucky Public Service Commission must approve any rate increases. Duke Energy, which provides power to most of the city, has not yet indicated if it will comply with the new agreement.

Florence City Council: Tuesday, Oct. 22 

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: 8100 Ewing Boulevard

Highland Heights City Council (special meeting): Tuesday, Oct. 22 

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: City Building 

What you need to know: the special meeting has a request to go into an executive session for discussions of pending litigation against the public agency to address a potential settlement. It also has a municipal order authorizing execution of a settlement agreement with FPNKU, LLC.

Ludlow City Council (special meeting): Thursday, Oct. 24

Time: 5 p.m.

Location: 51 Elm Street

Walton Verona Board of Education: Thursday, Oct. 24

Time: 6 p.m.
