coochiechronicles

“Coochie Chronicles: The Spoken Word Play” will be performed at The Carnegie in Covington Sunday evening. The show is described as a frank, melodic exploration of the lives, sexuality, politics, stereotypes, and realities of women of color. A multimedia presentation, Coochie Chronicles utilizes spoken word poetry, pop music, original songs, imagery, and statistics to chronicle the “universal realities of womanhood and the unique experiences of women of color”.

The show was developed after two of the performers were part of the 2007 University of Cincinnati production of The Vagina Monolgues and the pair started working on monologues of their own. One other performer had written a book of poetry titled. “Coochie Chronicles” and the group borrowed that name.

The organizers of the show say it is “a work steeped in feminist thought and theory” and a “sista-girl chat with teeth”.

The performers will be dressed in all black, but will be adorned with shelves. A news release describes the imagery as a throwback to African culture where cowrie shells are used in ceremonies, as currency during the slave trade, and as women’s jewelry. The shell also, they say, resembles a vagina, which they colorfully refer to as a coochie.

The show runs Sunday night at 7:00PM at the Carnegie Center for Visual & Performing Arts on Scott Boulevard. The show is presented by Society’s Tongue.
