In preparation for the development at the World Peace Bell site, Newport has secured a lease agreement to construct a temporary parking lot at 5th and York Streets.

The city said this temporary lot is “critical to continuing to provide parking for businesses and residents in the area.” Work will begin in the coming weeks and, depending on weather conditions, should take several days to complete. Once completed, the lot will be available for public parking.

When the proposed parking garage is built and ready to occupy, the temporary surface will be removed and restored to its original condition.

In addition, a lot at the corner of 6th Street and Columbia Street is being constructed as part of this project to relocate existing users of the 5th Street and York Street lot. Both lots are temporary and will be restored to their previous condition when the parking garage is complete.
