Kenton County Commissioner Kris Knochelmann scored the endorsement of the Cincinnati Enquirer on Thursday in his bid to unseat Judge-Executive Steve Arlinghaus.

The Enquirer wrote that it based most of its decision on the CVG Airport Board spending and wrote of the campaign:

To be fair, Arlinghaus is in a tough position given the odd arrangement that governs CVG. Though it’s located in Boone County, Kenton County paid for its construction and owns it, and the Kenton County judge-executive has the authority to appoint 13 of its 18 members and all seven of its voting members.

That puts the judge-executive in the tricky position of protecting a county property while giving the rest of the region a say in what is a valuable regional asset. Arlinghaus has navigated that narrow passage well more often than not. Knochelmann, to his credit, supports more extensive reform to the way CVG is run. He favors reorganization of the board and a more prominent role for Hamilton County and Cincinnati, and he also says airport appointments should not be made by one person.

The Enquirer also said that Knochelmann’s campaign is unnecessarily negative at times. Read the full endorsement: Cincinnati Enquirer

Knochelmann was also endorsed this week by Kenton Circuit Clerk John Middleton.

“The voters of Kenton County have an important decision to make this year when they vote for Judge Executive. I’ve known both of the Republican candidates for Judge‐Executive for some time. Like you, I want to make an informed decision when making this important vote,” Middleton said in a statement. “I want a Judge‐Executive who does not criticize past Republican Judge‐Executives.  Therefore I am voting for Kris Knochelmann.  I want a Judge Executive who recognizes that former Judge‐Executive Ralph Drees successfully developed one of the top 25 home building companies in America and would therefore know how to successfully run Kenton County.  Therefore I am voting for Kris Knochelmann.”

Arlinghaus, meanwhile, who has touted his endorsements from most Kenton County mayors, highlights his signature endorsement from US Senator Rand Paul in a pair of TV ads that will air during Cincinnati Reds baseball games on Time Warner Cable in Northern Kentucky. See one of the videos below:
