The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet presented more than $830,000 to Boone County for road repairs and maintenance.

The money, presented by Andy Yeager with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 at Tuesday’s Boone County Fiscal Court meeting, is part of the 2023-2024 Recommended Rural Secondary Program.

“Boone County was awarded $830,000 from KYTC,” Yeager said. “Of that, $252,000 will be for routine maintenance and traffic, which includes pothole repairs, snow and ice removal and anything maintenance crews do on their secondary routes.”

The county had an undistributed free balance from last year of $266,000 and flex funds, which are discretionary funds available to purchase goods and services, which left them with $716,000 for projects this year.

Yeager recommended the resurfacing of Big Bone Road, which is KY 1925 from Rice Pike up to KY 536, just under two miles, with an estimated cost of $146,000.

“The next section I recommend is Glencoe Verona Road, KY 16,” Yeager said. “This is the section from the Gallatin county line up to the KY 14 491 intersection. Just under 2.5 miles and would cost around $200,000.”

The next project on Yeager’s list is slide repairs on Riddles Run, KY2 852.

“There’s multiple slips out there,” Yeager said. “I just have the one location but we’re going to try and adjust two or three of the slips.”

That leaves the county with $151,000. Yeager told the court he spoke with County Engineer, Rob Franxman, and said the county is going to elect the use of their flex funds.

“I think the county should elect to retain the flex funds,” Franxman said. “These are good fair projects. I believe using flex funds for resurfacing on our streets at this time is appropriate.”

These projects are set to begin late this fall.
