Note: All games took place Saturday unless otherwise noted.
The area had six teams crowned All “A” region tournament champions in volleyball and soccer.
The 8th Region held all their championship games on Saturday and Walton-Verona won all three of them. Both 9th Region soccer and 10th Region volleyball also had their title games Saturday.
All A Girls Soccer Region Championships
9th Region
St. Henry 1, Beechwood 0
The Crusaders won the region title for the second straight year with another one-goal win at Villa Madonna.
That goal came with about 25 minutes left from Bri Farwick. Annalee Ernst won the tournament most valuable player honors for the Crusaders (4-4) with Gabby Pitsic and Josie Knollman earning spots on the all-tournament team.
Senior Brooke Fowee kept the Tigers (5-3) in the game with 15 saves.
Beechwood plays at Great Crossing (3-0-2) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. St. Henry plays at Notre Dame (8-1) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
8th Region
Walton-Verona 10, Gallatin County 0
The Bearcats won another region crown in convincing fashion.
Emma Landrum scored three goals for the Bearcats (6-0-2) to lead the way. Macy Sawyer had two goals and one assist with Cam Christy scoring one goal and adding four assists. Aubrey Fuller, Kassidy Evans, Olivia Sams and Emma Moore had the other goals with Emily Bowlin and Chloe Schwanenberger adding assists.
Walton-Verona also downed Henry County, 10-0 later in the day. Christy had a hat trick and one assist to lead the way with Trinity Bauwens scoring twice and Bowling scoring once and assisting on another. Evans, Sams, Landrum and Avery Turner scored the other goals with Moore assisting two. Fuller, Sawyer, Braylin Terrell and Claire Sams had one assist each.
Walton-Verona plays host to Ryle (1-6) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Boys Soccer
9th Region
Newport Central Catholic 3, Holy Cross 1

The Thoroughbreds won their second straight All “A” region championship.
Tournament MVP Ryan Desmond scored two goals for the Thoroughbreds (7-1) and Brady Diedenhofer had the other. Owen Roeder had two assists and Mason McCloskey had two saves. Jonathan Green and Sam Krebs made the all-tournament team.
“I think every game, we’re taking a step up,” Desmond said. “We’re doing something new. It’s really all coming together right now.”
William Fisk scored the lone goal for the Indians (3-3-1) and Nico Voight had the assist. Goalkeeper Wyatt Driscoll had four saves.
“We knew that Nico is a really good player and we needed to account for him,” said Ben Williams, NewCath head coach. “We wanted to try to give them as little time as possible on the ball.”
Both teams play again Tuesday. NewCath plays at St. Henry (1-6) at 8 p.m. and Holy Cross plays at Pendleton County (1-3-1) at 7:30 p.m.
8th Region
Walton-Verona 4, Gallatin County 0
The Bearcats won the region crown behind 15 saves from goalkeeper Sam Kunkle.
Nicolas Garcia scored two goals for the Bearcats (4-3). Brennan East and Tyler Wolfe had the other two with Logan Pronk contributing two assists and Jackson Morwessel the other one.
Later that evening, Walton-Verona lost 3-2 to Bullitt Central. Wolfe and East had the Bearcat goals with Jonah Carrico and Mason Morwessel tallying two assists each. Kunkle also had 15 saves in this game.
Walton-Verona plays at Simon Kenton (4-2-1) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Volleyball
10th Region
Brossart wins twice

The Mustangs won twice at Augusta to capture a sixth straight All “A” region crown.
Callie Ritter finished the week with 25 kills, eight blocks, one assist, five digs and four aces for the Mustangs. Ritter, Kate Neltner and Maddie Kremer made the all-tournament team.
Bishop Brossart (6-1) knocked off the host Panthers, 2-0 (25-17, 25-20) in the semifinals. The Mustangs had 25 kills, five blocks, 23 assists, 36 digs and seven aces. Maddie Kremer led the Mustangs with nine digs and three aces. Aubrey Rebholz had 18 assists and 10 digs. Jessica Keller also had 10 digs. Ritter led Brossart with nine kills and four blocks.
Brossart then downed Calvary Christian, 2-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-22) in the championship game. The Mustangs had 28 kills, 11 blocks, 26 assists, 71 digs and five aces. Kremer had 21 digs in the win with Ritter tallying seven kills and four blocks. Neltner had seven kills and 12 digs. Payton Parker had four blocks with Rebholz recording 21 assists, 10 digs and two aces.
“Calvary put up a good fight,” said Danielle French, Brossart head coach. “This season’s going well so far. Our coaching staff says every day that we are one team and we have one goal. That’s to get back to state. That’s what we work through every single day. We practice like we’re going to state every single day.”
Brossart plays at Newport (2-7) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Calvary (6-2) plays at Villa Madonna (7-3) at the same time.
8th Region
Walton-Verona wins three
The Bearcats are headed back to state in Katelyn Sallee’s first season guiding the program.
Walton-Verona knocked off Cornerstone Christian, 2-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-17) and Williamstown, 2-0 (29-27, 25-17) before besting Eminence, 2-0 (25-23, 25-18) to win the crown. Macie Godwin won the tournament MVP honors for the Bearcats (5-3) with Isabella O’Brien, Chloe McIntosh, Natalie Ferguson and Makenna Simpson making the all-tournament team.
Against Eminence, Walton-Verona had 19 kills, one block, 19 assists, 35 digs and 13 aces. O’Brien had 12 digs in the win with Simpson and Amber Hall recording nine assists each. Simpson, Ferguson and Winter Vandiver had three aces each and McIntosh had a team-high six kills.
Walton-Verona had 22 kills, 22 assists, 51 digs and 11 aces against Williamstown. O’Brien had a team-highs of 23 digs and seven aces with Vandiver and McIntosh tallying six kills each. Hall and Simpson had 10 assists.
The Bearcats had 25 kills, one block, 25 assists, 59 digs and 16 aces against Cornerstone Christian. Simpson and Hall had 11 assists each with Vandiver and McIntosh recording six kills each. Annie Allen had a team-high 16 digs with O’Brien had 15 digs and five aces.
Walton-Verona travels to Pendleton County (4-2) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Girls Soccer
Dixie Heights 3, Bishop Brossart 0
The Colonels won their fifth in a row in the non-region win.
Karolyn Lighthall scored twice for the Colonels (7-1) increasing her team-high to nine on the season. Hailey Hall scoring the other one and adding one assist. Hadley Greene added two assists.
“(Dixie Heights head coach Kellie) Ponchak is a great coach,” Greene said. “She points things out and helps push us to the next level.”
Both teams are battling injuries. Abby Parsons and Keely Polk could not play after suffering injuries against Ryle for Dixie Heights. Avery Schaeffer and Kennedy Parks could not play for the Mustangs (6-2-1) and Abby Lloyd was limited.
“I’m so proud of how these girls really stepped up,” Ponchak said. “We had players come in and take on leadership roles and really did a good job. They impressed me.”
Dixie Heights plays at South Oldham (5-2) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Bishop Brossart travels to Highlands (4-2) at 8 p.m. Monday.
Notre Dame 2, Campbell County 1
The Pandas won their sixth in a row edging the visiting Camels.
Notre Dame (8-1) outshot Campbell County, 19-5. Cameron Kirtley and Carly Tranter scored the goals with Sadie Yapp adding an assist.
Goalkeepers Hannah Renaker and Adilynn Melton made two saves each for the Pandas.
Meryem Gonulates scored the lone goal for the Camels (3-4-1) and Allison McKee had the assist. Goalkeepers Abi Medaugh and Morgan Roomes had seven and three saves respectively for Campbell County.
Campbell County plays at Cooper (4-3-1) Monday at 8 p.m. Notre Dame plays host to St. Henry (4-4) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Conner wins three in Smoky Mountain Cup
The Cougars knocked off three Tennessee teams in their venture south over the weekend.
On Saturday, Conner (9-1-1) knocked off St. George’s from the Memphis suburb of Collierville, 5-1 then Bartlett, 2-0. Against St. George’s, Cayley Eilers had a hat trick of four goals and Michaela Potter scored the other one. Ashley Sweetay had two assists and Caitlyn Kenny added other one. Ally Welch made one save.
Against Bartlett, Izelee Kerns and Maya Owen had the goals and Kenny contributed one assist. Welch made two saves.
Conner then knocked off the Franklin County Rebels, 2-1. Kerns had one goal and one assist and Milana Arevalo scored the other goal. Welch made four saves.
Conner plays at Simon Kenton (3-6) on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Conner wins Silver Bracket at Thoroughbred Smash
The Cougars won all three games at Lafayette on Saturday to win the silver bracket.
Conner beat Louisville Male, 2-0 (25-11, 25-20), East Jessamine, 2-0 (25-17, 25-23) and Franklin County, 2-1 (25-23, 25-21) on Saturday to win the honor after going 1-1 on Friday. Against Male, Conner had 20 kills, five blocks, 20 assists, 27 digs and nine aces. Lilly Hamburg had seven kills and three blocks to lead the Cougars with Carly Nehus recording four. Aubrey Depenbrock had team-highs of 10 assists and three aces with Anna Hamilton digging up six balls.
Conner had 21 kills, two blocks, 19 assists, 34 digs and six aces against East Jessmine. Hamburg had six kills with Depenbrock contributing seven assists and seven digs. Hamilton had 10 digs and Maddie Leiprecht had four aces.
Conner had 33 kills, five blocks, 32 assists, 34 digs and four aces against Franklin County. Leiprecht had 18 assists, 12 digs and three aces and Hamilton 10 digs. Hamburg had 12 kills and Nehus followed with seven.
The Cougars travel to Dixie Heights (6-2) on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
Oldenburg Academy 3, Newport Central Catholic 1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22)
The Thoroughbreds could not put it all together after winning the first game on the road.
NewCath (1-6) had six aces, 42 kills, four blocks, 38 assists and 81 digs. Kori Reckers had two aces, 10 kills, 15 assists and 25 digs to lead the Thoroughbreds. Paytin Reckers followed with 18 digs. Reese McCloskey had nine kills and three blocks with Elena Henderson adding eight kills and two aces.
NewCath plays host to Beechwood (3-1) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
