There will be changes coming to a downtown Covington barber shop and men’s clothing store.
Cutman Barbershop – which opened last year at the Mutual Building – will expand in its current space, and to make room for the expansion, flow – a shop for men will close in the same space. That store has been open in downtown Covington – first on Scott Boulevard and then in the Mutual Building – since November 2011.
The men’s shop carries apparel, sneakers, and accessories for men and is best known for its collection of limited edition caps and jackets honoring the short-lived 1913 Covington Blue Sox baseball team. The shop was a participant in both CoSign Covington and the Curb’d parklets project, has hosted pop-up shops and events for other local makers and brands, and led the effort to install a mural of the late Tony Award-winning actress Una Merkel in the Arcade on Pike Street this fall.
“The men’s shop has had a great run, but this decision is best for the space long-term,” said owner Jerod Theobald. “The barbershop is doing extremely well and we want to make sure we’re not only meeting the needs of our clients, but making improvements to exceed their expectations.”
As part of the expansion plans, the barbershop will look to hire a second full-time barber and will add a small lounge area in the front of the space. The shop will also offer additional grooming products beginning in late January. Recently, Cutman Barbershop launched a new mobile-friendly website, which allows clients to book appointments online.
So the barbershop can make the necessary changes to the space by January 3, flow – a shop for men will close on Saturday, December 31. Several promotions are planned for the weeks ahead and Theobald said that he hopes many of the shop’s regular customers will make it in before the end of the year to say goodbye.
“With any small business, there are a lot of ups and downs and we’ve been fortunate to hang in there for five solid years. So many wonderful people have come through our doors and we are thankful for all of the relationships we’ve built with those in this community over that time. This wasn’t an easy decision, but we’re looking forward to exploring new opportunities and taking on new challenges,” said Theobald.
