The Fort Thomas Board of Education met on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. Board member, Brad Fennell was absent. Here’s your roundup.
K-9s to Fight Crime
Nine HMS students presented their legislative bill that was put forth to the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA).

Request for Full-Time Assistant Principal
Three MES parents, Sarah Kleier, Beth Baker, and Pam Schultz, attended the meeting to express a desire for a full-time assistant principal at Moyer.

HHS & MES Renovation
Jerry Wissman provided The Board with updates on the project, and said that the blacktop should be completed soon, and stated that much of the interior was finished during Spring Break.

Student Attendance Day
A motion was passed for the adoption of revised Policy 08.31. This was the second reading and it passed unanimously. The portion of the policy change is below:
In extenuating circumstances, students may request in writing, to the High School Principal, the ability to utilize “Early Bird” classes to meet the school day length requirement approved by the Board. The request to alter the ending time of the regular school day shall be considered at the discretion of the Principal, in collaboration with guidance counselors, and based on the request enabling a student access to an opportunity otherwise not offered at Highlands High School. Requests will only be considered when made prior to the start of the school year and if students are enrolled in six (6) courses while making adequate progress toward graduation.
Employee Wellness Incentive
A motion passed to approve the Employee Wellness Incentive for participation in the Firecracker 5000 in which the entry fee would be paid out of the general budget.
Superintendent Gene Kirchner said that he believes it’s a win-win for the teachers and community and said nearly 100 FTIS staff members participated last year.
Establish New Positions for Elementary Specials Teachers
A motion passed to establish three new positions for elementary specials teachers in Art, Music, and World Language.
Elementary Instructional Technology Specialist
A motion passed to approve a new position for Elementary Instructional Technology Specialist.
English Language Learners (ELL) Teacher – Part-time
A motion passed to approve a new position for a part-time ELL teacher.
May Special Meeting
The Board scheduled a special meeting for Thursday, May 5, at 8 am for a review of the May Board agenda which includes a draft budget for 2016-17.
