Board Chair, Karen Allen, called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. on March 14, with all five board members in attendance.
Student Attendance Day
Tentative approval based on a first reading of policy for Student Attendance Day passed with a motion by Mrs. Lisa Duckworth and a second by Mr. Jeff Beach.
The policy deals with the length of the student attendance day designated by the Board and provide students with no less than the minimum number of student attendance days/hours required by law. The Board may request approval of an alternative school calendar based on procedures set out in Kentucky Administrative Regulations.

Recognition
The Board recognized and congratulated HHS senior Mikayla Reichert who won the Indoor Track & Field Shot Put state title. This is her 2nd consecutive state championship for this event.
Congratulations to the HHS Dance teams for their state championship wins – Varsity in Pom and JV in Hip Hop and Pom.

Students from Ms. Shuman’s 5th grade math class gave a demonstration of Hands-On Equations, solving problems and explaining the process. They involved Board members in their last equation and led them through solving the problem.

Renovation Update – Highlands High School Renovation – Phase 4, Moyer
Jerry Wissman gave the Board an update on the current status of the project, noting that black-topping the parking lot will be delayed pending the completion of the loop and connecting Fieldhouse driveway.

Some additions, such as adding the deconstruction of the playground equipment that the previous contractor couldn’t meet the deadline (+10,000) and deductions, such as replacing PVC pipe and fittings for below-slab sanitary piping in lieu of cast iron fittings (-$41,000) were discussed and approved.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE DAY EXCEPTIONS
The Board shall provide a preschool education program in compliance with applicable statutes and administrative regulations.
Kindergarten (entry level of the primary program) shall be provided no less than the equivalent of one-half (1/2) day (three hours), five (5) days a week for a full school year for each kindergarten student.
Under procedures developed by the Superintendent, the length of the student attendance day for kindergarten students may be reduced during the initial week(s) of the school year to allow for screening, testing and other appropriate activities.
In extenuating circumstances, students may request in writing, to the High School Principal, the ability to utilize “Early Bird” classes to meet the school day length requirement approved by the Board. The request to alter the ending time of the regular school day shall be considered at the discretion of the Principal, in collaboration with guidance counselors, and based on the request enabling a student access to an opportunity otherwise not offered at Highlands High School. Requests will only be considered when made prior to the start of the school year and if students are enrolled in six (6) courses while making adequate progress toward graduation.
Students with disabilities shall attend school in accordance with the provisions of their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Students with disabilities and students attending primary school may attend less than six (6) hours per day under programs approved by the Board and the Commissioner of Education.
EARLY ARRIVAL
Except when a group sponsor assembles a student group for a specific activity, high school students shall be directed to arrive at school no earlier than 7:00 a.m. each school day; all other students shall be directed to arrive at school no earlier than 8:00 a.m. each student attendance day. Under procedures developed by the Principal, a safe location inside each school shall be designated for students who arrive before that time.
MASTER SCHEDULE
An up-to-date master (bell) schedule shall be on file in each school and up-to-date master (bell) schedules for each school shall be on file in the District’s central office.
