COV200 Tokens

COV200, the volunteer group behind Covington’s bicentennial celebration, announced this week that they are creating commemorative bicentennial tokens as part of the upcoming BB&T Summer Celebration, slated to take place July 9 – 14 along Covington’s Riverfront Landing.

“When we talk to Covington residents about the bicentennial celebration, one of the things we’re asked most about is if we will have commemorative wooden nickels like those that were given out during the sesquicentennial,” said COV200 Chair, Norm Desmarais. “Thanks to the generosity of a grant from the group Covingten, we’re excited to say we will.”

Bicentennial tokens will be given away during the Covington Neighborhoods’ Independence Day Parade in Peaselburg on July 4 as well as during the neighborhood events taking place Saturday, July 11. Tokens can be kept as a keepsake or redeemed during the BB&T Summer Celebration for a free ride on the 50-foot Ferris wheel, or a trip down the 125-foot inflatable slide.

In an effort to reach more of Covington’s younger residents, COV200 is partnering with local organizations such as Headstart, the Covington Independent School District, the Boys and Girls Club, Born Leaders of Covington (BLOCK), and Covington pools, to distribute bicentennial tokens to Covington children as well as to provide transportation to the event.

“The BB&T Summer Celebration will be a great event for families and we want to make sure that as many children as possible have the opportunity to be part of bicentennial festivities,” added Amanda Greenwell, COV200 Vice Chair.
