Blue Marble Bookstore Presents: Mama on a Budget: Green Bean Delivery
Sports Illustrated was kind enough recently to put three
impossible women on their front cover (each wearing a bathing suit with barely
enough fabric to make one modest suit if combined) as part of their annual
reminder that swimsuit season is upon us and the proverbial “you” does not look
like Nina Agdal, Chrissy Teagan, or Lily Aldridge (probably don’t even look as
good as their grandmothers!). So,
post-Holiday health-food kick is upon us.
My husband and I have always enjoyed shopping at local
farmer’s markets, even naming our daughter Finley after an effeminized version
of Findlay Market. That said, in
the dead of polar vortex winter, the number and frequency of markets has
decreased, not to mention the quality of food received there. Still yearning to support the
family-farm, local croppers, and keep my dollars as much in my community as
possible all while balancing the fact that I flat-out refuse to bundle my
children up and take them out in this weather only to find two over-ripened
avocados and a measly pear, I turned to Green Bean Delivery.
Green
Bean Delivery was started by a husband and wife team from Indiana and they
are networked with the best organic produce growers & local artisans
in the tri-state area. Green Bean Delivery provides home delivery of
organic produce & natural groceries to Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky,
Dayton and Columbus areas.
So how does this work? From the website: “Green Bean
Delivery is a membership-based service. In order to receive deliveries you will
need to create an account. There are no sign-up or membership fees for their service.
The only requirements for membership are a valid credit or debit card and a
Standing Order totaling $35 or more. Your Standing Order consists of the
Produce Bin you choose and the frequency of delivery, weekly or biweekly. You
will have the opportunity to change and/or add to your order the weekend before
you are scheduled for delivery.”
Fort Thomas Deliveries are on Friday and you can place your
order as often or as infrequent as you want. My husband and I have only had two deliveries thus far but
both have been timely, accurate, and of high quality. We’ve had the organic eggs,
free-range organic chicken, mangos, avocados, and assorted fruits and
vegetables. Any food items that
are not sourced locally are sourced with fair trade practices. Also, you can fill your bin with
artisan breads, cheeses, and other items.
My husband, being a cheap skate, was very opposed to this
idea when I first requested we do it a couple years back. He did a cost analysis and we’ve found
that it does cost a bit more, about 15-20% for the total order. But the quality is significantly
better, we save time in not having to go to the store, we buy fewer “impulse”
items, and we save gas. So, all
in, the cost is not that much higher.
So, pick back up your forgotten New Years’ Resolutions and
eat healthier just in time for swimsuit season. If you do decide to sign up tell them Mama on a Budget sent
you (No, don’t actually tell them that. They have no idea who I am).
