The photos on Meredith L.
Buscher’s Facebook page tell the story of a vibrant young woman, a pretty blonde
who is shown smiling on her graduation day, at the beach with her boyfriend,
leaning in close to her grandmother.
Buscher
was one of two people who were killed Sunday night after a series of collisions
that police say were sparked by a drunken driver on Interstate 75 in Madison
County.
Troopers
arrested Bryan M. Mangan, 56, of South Bend, Ind., and took him to the Madison
County jail, according to state police at the Richmond post. Mangan was charged
with aggravated drunken driving and driving on a suspended license.

State
police identified the two who were killed as Buscher, 22, of Richmond, and
Jeffrey R. Campbell, 30, of Louisville.
Campbell
died at the scene. Buscher died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
Buscher
and Campbell had left their cars to help others involved in the collisions when
they were struck by a vehicle driven by Clifford H. Steinhauer, 41, of Fort
Thomas, said trooper Robert Purdy, public affairs officer with the Richmond
post.
Steinhauer,
who was injured in the crash, was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon at
UK Chandler Hospital.
The crash
occurred about 7:30 p.m. Sunday about 2 miles north of Richmond exit 90, state
police said.
Purdy
described the wreck as a rapid series of several separate collisions involving
at least five vehicles.
Mangan was
driving north when he lost control of his 1999 Ford Explorer, striking a
guardrail and colliding with several vehicles.
Police
said Mangan’s SUV overturned and came to a stop, partly blocking the left lane
of I-75. More collisions followed as approaching drivers tried to avoid
Mangan’s vehicle, police said.
Purdy said
Steinhauer was driving a 1997 Toyota 4-Runner that hit Buscher and Campbell. No
charges are expected to be filed against him.
“It was
pretty complicated, and we were busy most of the evening trying to put
everything together,” Purdy said. The
investigation probably will take some time to complete, he said.
Buscher
was a recent graduate of UK who worked as a recruiter for Insight Global. She
attended Madison Central High School.
Services
will be at 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Richmond.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Thursday at the church. Oldham, Roberts &
Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
