The Covington City Commission will vote on Tuesday whether to accept four properties to be donated to the City.

At a special working meeting of the city commission last Thursday, City Engineer Mike Yeager explained that property owners and banks often offer to donate certain properties that face foreclosure or other situations because there may be a tax benefit to doing so.

Some of the properties offered to the City recently could be eyed for rehab work or demolition, Yeager said. He also noted that all liens and taxes associated with the properties come with them.

Thirteen properties were part of Thursday’s presentation. It was noted that not all of them are appropriate for donation because the cost to accept them would be higher than letting the foreclosure process take place.

The four properties on Tuesday’s city commission meeting agenda are 2015 Garrard Street in Austinburg (already demolished), 1324 Alberta Street in Botany Hills (likely demolition), 656 Pike Street in Lewisburg (likely demolition), and 2309 Herman Street in Peaselburg (vacant land).

The agenda states that the goal is to put these properties back into productive use.

Other properties suggested for donation to the City (though not on Tuesday’s agenda) include: 112 Martin Street in the Eastside, 320 West 35th Street in Latonia, 1432 Banklick Street in the Westside, 515 East 16th Street in Austinburg, 2507 Herman Street in Peaselburg, 507 Worth Street in Lewisburg (noted as the first parish house for St. John’s Church), 1207 Wheeler Street in the Eastside, 1322 Hermes Avenue in Lewisburg (likely demolition), and 664 Pike Street in Lewisburg (vacant land).
