Thursday’s continuous rainfall didn’t stop the 4th of July parade in Covington’s Peaselburg neighborhood, but it did force organizers to alter the route which angered some neighbors who were waiting along the original path laid out for the participants and candy toss only to come up empty-handed.
“The Peaselburg parade was a bust,” wrote resident Rebecca Pettigrew. “Children lining 21st and Howell in the rain go home crying, empty-handed. ‘Rain or shine’, the Facebook page proclaimed. I am not happy.”
“The children on this side of Nineteenth (Street) got nothing. No parade. It didn’t come this way.”
Friends of Peaselburg Vice Chair Susan Barnett told The River City News that the late decision was made to shorten the route to protect the safety of the many walkers in the parade.
“Unfortunately, a last-minute decision was made to start the parade early and shorten the length of the parade due to the approaching heavy rains,” Barnett said. “This was for the safety of the many participants as well as the bystanders. It was hard to notify everyone of the change. As usual, the post-parade festivities continued inside the school gym where everyone was safe.”
The parade circled the block around St. Augustine Church & School where the post-parade festivities took place.
Roughly one hundred people participated in the parade and prizes were awarded to the best costumes. Mayor Sherry Carran, City Commissioner Chuck Eilerman, and Police Chief Spike Jones represented the city in the parade.
