Simon Kenton hoped to ride the wave of momentum from the victory over North Oldham in the region semifinals Wednesday to the elusive 8th Region championship.

But the Oldham County Colonels stopped them for the second time in three years, 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-14, 26-24) in the championship game at Eminence on Thursday. Simon Kenton had beaten Oldham County in the two regular season meetings.

“Oldham County played solid and we were not able to put the ball down and make the plays we needed to,” said Amy Marx, Simon Kenton head coach. “We only hit three percent and that doesn’t win a regional championship. Even though we didn’t win, we had an amazing season, beating some very high-level opponents.”

Simon Kenton (30-8) had 39 kills, 78 digs, 38 assists and four aces. Tori Chasteen had 19 digs and two assists with Sophie Spanier digging up 15 balls. Ce Ce Scalf had 14 assists and eight digs.

Jenna Kitchens led the Pioneers with 16 kills and Keira Hans had eight kills and four blocks. Alisha Hawkins had seven kills and three blocks with Sadie Rehkamp recording 14 assists to go with eight digs.

Simon Kenton graduates four seniors in Hawkins, Spanier, Rehkamp and foreign exchange student Giada Simionato.
