Scott battled the injury bug and a 40th District runner-up Bourbon County Colonels squad that had nothing to lose in the 10th Region volleyball quarterfinals at Harrison County on Monday.
Scott came through with the 3-2 (25-23, 25-16, 16-25, 25-27, 15-6) victory. Scott has won all four meetings against Bourbon County (10-20) since joining the 10th Region in 2012.
“Nothing is easy in the postseason. We went through a little adversity,” said Andrea Sullivan, Scott head coach. “I’m proud of the fight. We found a way to win, and that’s what it’s all about.”
Scott tried to rest injured senior Brooke Balsley and junior libero Elise Manhardt left the game with an injury in the third game after leading the Eagles with 11 digs. The Eagles (23-15) played Balsley some in the fifth game, but not much.
Scott finished with 39 digs, 46 kills, 44 assists, seven aces, 13 solo and two assisted blocks. Milyn Minor had 14 kills and solo blocks and Brooklyn Helm had nine kills and four aces. Payton Grigsby had 12 kills, two solo blocks, one assisted block and seven digs with Morgan Justice tallying nine kills, two solo blocks and one assisted block. Ryann Grigsby had 42 assists and three aces.
“Everyone is consistently putting balls down and it’s definitely helping because the other team’s blockers don’t know where we’re going to go,” Justice said. “A lot of times, we go one-on-one with their blockers and we usually get a kill right off it.”
Three players tried to pick up Manhardt’s absence. Lexi Ennis dug up four balls and Jaeda Menfee recorded two solo blocks.
Scott takes on Bracken County (23-15) at 6 p.m. back at Harrison County in the semifinals Wednesday. Scott is making its fifth straight region semifinal appearance.
