Volleyball

Conner 3, Simon Kenton 2 (20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-13)

The Conner Cougars volleyball team played host to Simon Kenton in a match-up of two of the best teams in Northern Kentucky.

The visitors took the first two games. But the hosts came back to win in five sets.

Conner (24-7) had 99 digs and seven service aces. Anna Hamilton dug up 35 balls with Aubrey Depenbrock digging up 17 to go with 34 assists and three aces.

“It was neck and neck all five games,” said Douglas Rabe, Conner head coach. “We allowed the emotions to take over. I told them to play with the emotions they were feeling, but you have to use your heads as well. Simon Kenton is smooth. They just kept attack, defend, attack, defend. But our girls put their hearts on their sleeves and I thought it was helping us because we were using it as motivation, rather than it being to their detriment. That was what put us over the top.”

The Cougars controlled the net with 64 kills, 16 blocks and 64 assists. Lilly Hamburg had 23 kills and six blocks with Carly Nehus smacking down 15 kills. Peyton Walker had 12 kills and three blocks with Annika Berwanger recording six blocks. McKenzie Deatherage had seven kills and Jordan Potter added four.

“Going into the game, I had a feeling the game was going to go five sets because we’re an amazing team and so are they,” Potter said. “Even though we were down the first two sets, we knew the game was not over. When we really want to win, we come together as a team to make that happen.”

Simon Kenton (24-6) had 54 kills, nine blocks, 13 aces, 51 assists and 91 digs. Alisha Hawkins had 18 kills, three blocks, two aces and six digs. Jenna Kitchens had 15 kills, two aces and five digs with Keira Hans tallying 14 kills, four blocks and four aces. Tori Chasteen had 39 digs and two aces with Sophie Spanier recording 16 digs and three aces.

“We struggled in a few rotations to make adjustments and put the ball down around the block,” said Amy Marx, Simon Kenton head coach. “We shut down their bigger hitters the first two sets, but gave them more opportunities in the rest of the match. We didn’t put the ball down ourselves when we needed to. It was a hard-fought match on both sides and could have went either way.”

Conner plays at Calvary Christian (15-10) on Thursday at 7 p.m. Simon Kenton plays at Walton-Verona (15-15) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Mustangs still have a shot at the top seed in the 37th District Tournament.

Brossart (19-10) took the first step sweeping the Cougars (15-10). The Mustangs had eight aces, 31 kills, two blocks, 27 assists and 64 digs. Maddie Kremer had 20 digs and three aces with Kate Neltner recording 11 kills and 13 digs. Aubrey Rebholz had 14 assists and Nadia Shurley recorded 12.

“We just want the girls to go out there and play to their potential,” said Danielle French, Brossart head coach. “We know what they are capable of. We’ve seen it throughout the year. We just have to stay out of our heads. That has been our biggest issue. We’ll have a couple mistakes in a row, then shut down. We’ve told them that we have to stop doing that. We have to make sure we build our teammates up whenever we see them getting down in a slump. We noticed that getting done (Tuesday).”

The Cougars had 19 kills, 57 digs, 19 assists, one ace and one block. Savannah Ryan led Calvary with 13 assists and 13 digs. Alexis Hickey had 17 digs and six kills with Ella Mulling digging up 13 balls.
