At a scoreless stalemate through nearly 90 minutes of play, Bishop Brossart was just seconds away from going into penalty kicks with Bryan Station in the opening round matchup of the KHSAA boys state soccer tournament.

But with 29 seconds left in the second overtime, Defenders’ Lincoln Wallingford finally broke through on one of the many Bryan Station chances in the match. Off a corner kick, the ball was headed around a few times and found the foot of Wallingford, who blasted one by Mustangs keeper Luke D’Alessandro. D’Alessandro had stopped 12 shots prior to Wallingford’s shot, but unlucky No. 13 found its way through.

The loss ends the Mustangs season at 16-8-1. Entering the match in the Rundell Rankings, an ELO/Computer-based ranking system for boys and girls high school soccer in Kentucky, Bryan Station was No. 8, Bishop Brossart was No. 35.

Brossart was in search of their first ever state tournament victory, coming up short in their three prior trips as well.

Earlier in the day, the All-10th Region team was released. Making it for Brossart was Sam Chirumbolo, Luke Neltner and Max Runge to the first team, Kyle Piscitello and Luke D’Alessandro to the second team.

Covington Catholic starts their state tournament tonight. They play at West Jessamine at 7 p.m.

The Bishop Brossart and Highlands girls also play tournament in the first round. Brossart plays at Lexington Catholic, Highlands plays at Boyle County. Both of those game times are 7 p.m.
